How to Use Record Search

Records can be searched in four different ways:

• Word Search enables you to search by place name, for example, 'Kinross', 'Blackford'.
• Period Search enables you to search by broad date ranges, for example, Roman, 18th century.
• Category and Term Search enables you to search for types of site, for example, Category RELIGIOUS and RITUAL and Term STONE CIRCLE will select all records of all stone circles.
• Parish Search enables you to search for all records within a selected parish, for example, Kettins, Comrie.

You can create any combination of searches, for example, select all Country Houses in Fortingall parish. There are five ready made Record Searches demonstrating how to build your own searches (Example Searches).

Category and Term Search

The Category and Term Search works from two picklists and a category must be selected before a specific site or building type. The following example illustrates how the Category and Term Search works:

Search for all FORTS
Forts are defensive type of site and so appear under the broad category DEFENCE. Select DEFENCE and then study the TERM picklist. If you enter FORT a wide range of forts will be returned, for example, hillforts, promontory forts, legionary fortress etc. If you enter HILLFORT, only hillforts will be returned.
